Background

WHO WE ARE

The North Carolina Playwrights Alliance originally formed out of a meeting of playwrights at the North Carolina Writers' Network Conference in November 2001.  Playwrights from around the state have rallied together to share information and resources, celebrate the work of playwrights, and advocate to improve the environment for new plays in North Carolina.  The Alliance's achievements have been impressive and include:

  • Declaration by Governor Easley of 2002-2003 as the "Year of the North Carolina Playwright."  (Click to view text of proclamation, or for a full image, click here.)

  • Development of programs and workshops for playwrights at the North Carolina Writers' Network Conference and North Carolina Theatre Conference.

  • Securing a grant from the North Carolina Arts Council to bring in Charles Kopelman (Douglas & Kopelman Artists, Inc.-NYC) to present a workshop on finding a play agent and also read and critique selected plays by North Carolina writers.

  • Institution of quarterly meetings around the state to network, plan activities, and share our work.

  • Creation of an electronic presence through the Alliance list serve and web site, and design of  outreach materials including mailers and newsletters to promote the activities of NC playwrights.

  • Collaboration with North Carolina Theatre Educators Association on "Playworks," an exciting new statewide Playwrights-in the-Schools program.

  • Production of the country's first (wild and crazy) "Play Slam"!

  • Participation in Theatre-Playwright Roundtable to assess the state of new plays in North Carolina.

  • Fun pot-lucks and parties!

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

The Alliance is set up as a membership organization, with an executive board selected from the members.   Please click on "Joining NCPA" for further information on becoming part of this terrific new playwrights' association.
