PROCLAMATION BY THE GOVERNOR OF THE STATE OF NORTH CAROLINA
WHEREAS, North Carolina playwrights immeasurably enrich the life of the
state, region, and nation's cultural community; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina playwrights have formed a permanent organization,
called North Carolina Playwrights Alliance, under the guidance of the North
Carolina Writers Network, to unite and serve playwrights of North Carolina
through the promotion and advocacy of playwrights' work, and the creation of
state, regional, national, and global production and networking
opportunities; and
WHEREAS, North Carolina playwrights have planned a year of special
activities celebrating the art of playwriting in the state, culminating in a
number of events planned at the November 2002 North Carolina Writers'
Network conference; and
WHEREAS, the establishment of "The Year of the North Carolina Playwright"
will support the State of North Carolina's continued efforts to promote a
strong cultural climate, enhancing the quality of life for all its
residents.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL F. EASLEY, Governor of the State of North
Carolina, do hereby proclaim April 1, 2002 - March 31, 2003 as "YEAR OF THE
NORTH CAROLINA PLAYWRIGHT," and call upon our citizens and interested groups
to observe the year with appropriate ceremonies and cultural activities that
promote awareness of the art of playwriting and the vital role that North
Carolina playwrights perform in the life of the state.
